The Darbuka is a traditional goblet-shaped drum with its roots in the Middle East and the Arab North Africa. Over the centuries, it has evolved into one of the most popular percussion instruments worldwide. Especially in the last 50 years, not only has the popularity of the Darbuka drum increased, but also its shape and the materials used in its construction have changed.
Traditionally, the goblet-shaped body of the drum is made of clay and fitted with a goat skin as the striking surface. However, nowadays, Darbukas made of metal are commonly found. These modern instruments usually use synthetic skins, which sound distinctly different from natural skins.
To combine tradition and modernity, Majid Drums in Cologne has come up with something entirely new:
A Darbuka with an aluminum body and a natural skin striking surface.
The aluminum body, painted in terracotta colors, revives the classic ceramic look of the drum while making it more robust, durable, and suitable for transport. The use of aluminum can be traced back to ancient Egyptian construction methods.
As is typical for instruments from Majid Drums, this Darbuka can, of course, be tuned using the patented screw system. This system avoids the need to heat the skin for tuning, which automatically increases the quality and durability of the natural skin.
With the combination of traditional and modern elements, along with their own ideas and construction methods, master Majid Karami has truly created a world-first.
This unique percussion instrument is available in two sizes. With a minimum diameter of 28 cm (approximately 11 inches), both variants offer rich sound and a comfortable playing experience. The skin for the striking surface can also be individually selected. Options include fish skin, goat skin, or deer skin. You can also order a replacement skin if desired.
Due to its special composition, this handmade instrument offers a warm, multi-faceted sound that evokes oriental dreams with its deep bass. With the unique sound of our new Darbuka drum, unforgettable rhythms can be played that the world has never heard before. From Cologne – to the wide world!
