The Udu, originated in Nigerian traditional music, is usually made out of clay. Majid Drums has developed two wooden variations of the traditional Udu: the Ta-Udu and the Udu Wood.
Udu Wood is a tuneable instrument, that creates distinct and unforgettable sound effects.
Origins of Udu Wood
Udu Wood has a rich history rooted in the traditional Udu clay pot drum, which originated in Nigeria. Majiddrums crafted this percussion out of wood, resulting in the creation of Udu Wood. Made from high-quality materials such as calfskin or fish skin, Udu Wood offers enhanced durability and a truly authentic sound. This evolution allows percussionists and musicians to explore new possibilities and push the boundaries of their creativity.
The Unique Design
Udu Wood features three distinct playing surfaces that produce different pitch ranges and tones. This drum is also equipped with two kaskaritas, which enhance the sound. With these kaskaritas, a latin sound can be produced and played very quickly. The Kaskaritas are also a patented idea of the master craftsman Majid and consist of different woods.
This versatile instrument allows performers to explore a vast range of sounds, producing attractive melodies and rhythms.
Another standout feature of UduWood is its tunable nature. Equipped with a screw system, musicians can adjust the tension of the calfskin or fish skin surface to achieve their desired sound. This flexibility empowers artists to experiment and perfect their performance, tailor-fitting the instrument to their specific preferences.
Captivating Sound effects
Udu Wood is renowned for its exceptional sound effects that captivate listeners. The combination of the high-quality materials used in its construction with the unique design and tunable nature produces an unparalleled auditory experience.
The sound produced by UduWood varies depending on the player’s technique and the selected playing surface. From deep, resonating bass sounds to crisp and bright tones, percussionists can effortlessly create a wide range of mesmerizing sounds. Depending on the type of playing, eight different sounds can be played simultaneously. This makes Udu Wood a truly extraordinary instrument suitable for various musical genres, including jazz, world music, and contemporary fusion styles.
